University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The School of Art & Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications to fill one or more open-rank, non-tenure-track faculty appointments (up to 100% time for up to 9 months). Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses for the School of Art & Design in one or more instructional fields, mentor and oversee Graduate Teaching Assistants as needed, meet with instructors of other sections when appropriate. These appointments may be eligible for renewal at the school's discretion.

Current positions available include the following nine-month positions:

  • Adjunct Lecturer/Lecturer, Studio Art, Foundations: Observational Drawing, Expressive Drawing. This appointment is for one year and will include teaching at least two courses each in the fall and spring semesters. Observational Drawing (Theory and practice in observational drawing with emphasis on fundamental principles such as mark/line, shape/form, space/composition, linear/perspective, scale/proportion, value/tonal range, and pattern/texture). Expressive Drawing (Explores drawing concepts with emphasis on visual and embodied narrative, process, conceptual, non-objective, large format, seriality, and collage).
  • Teaching Assistant Professor in Graphic Design: Teaching responsibilities will include typography, cross-media editorial design, User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX), and studios infused by candidates' research expertise that enhance knowledge, methods, and skills necessary for entry-level professional practice. This appointment is for one year and will include teaching at least three courses each in the fall and spring semesters.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Adjunct Lecturer/Lecturer, Studio Art, Foundations: Terminal degree in drawing or related field; experience working with representation, abstraction, gesture, measuring, color theory, chiaroscuro, live and recorded visual reference, and narrative. Experience teaching drawing to undergraduate students is required. Candidates should have working knowledge of histories and theories of perspective, composition, and drawing based media (including graphite, charcoal, ink, and collage). Candidates should possess a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments and be in dialogue with contemporary discourse, particularly as it relates to practice or pedagogy.
  • Teaching Assistant Professor in Graphic Design: A terminal degree (PhD, MFA, MDes, or equivalent) in Graphic Design is required. Demonstrated excellence in teaching Graphic Design with experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level is highly desirable; studio teaching experience is preferred. Candidate should possess a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments and be in dialogue with contemporary design discourse, particularly as it relates to practice or pedagogy. An excellent working knowledge of appropriate software is required. Any extensive professional or research expertise such as typography, branding, user experience, motion, or active critical practice would be considered an asset. Preferred Qualifications (All Positions):



  • Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in a field relevant to the intended field of instruction.
  • A record of accomplishments in practice or in the profession and in dialog with contemporary discourse in the discipline, particularly as relates to practice or pedagogy.

Salary will be commensurate with rank and experience.



Proposed Starting Dates:
9-month appointments: August 16, 2024
Fall-semester appointments: August 16, 2024
Spring-semester appointments: January 1, 2025
