Job Description
At Houston Methodist, the Licensing Assistant position is responsible for providing administrative, documentation, logistical and data entry support as well as research, export control compliance, budgeting, license obligation monitoring, negotiating and communication support. This position assists with performing scientific background and patent literature searches. The Licensing Assistant position utilizes specialized knowledge in the life sciences to perform the essential functions of this position.
Requirements:
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Establishes and maintains robust working relationships with key stakeholders including faculty and scientists.
- Communicates on behalf of department and department leadership with scientists, clinicians, department administrators, researchers, legal services and licensee company representatives to ensure the smooth transfer of information to relevant stakeholders in order to facilitate department operations.
- Creates, reviews and negotiates agreements which may include License, Inter-institutional, Material Transfer and Non-Disclosure Agreements with third parties in conjunction with department management and Legal Services.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Assists department leadership in the creation of presentation materials and reports for a variety of audiences as needed.
- Assists in performing scientific background and literature searches.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Enters invention disclosure and agreement information into database. Performs simple invention reporting to funding agencies.
- Monitors Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) inbox.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Tracks due dates on reports due from licensees and assists department management in corresponding with licensees to obtain reports and revenues due.
- Assists with the preparation of marketing and promotional materials for business and scientific audiences and identification of marketing targets.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Seeks out opportunities to identify self-development needs and takes appropriate actions including the acquisition and maintenance of current intellectual property and technology transfer developments, industry trends and best practices.
- Assists, as necessary, in the engagement of industry partners about potential licensing agreements by fostering, developing and growing strategic partnerships and collaborations.
- Interacts with industry on a regular basis to expand HMH networks, keep abreast of market/technology trends and associated business opportunities that are relevant for HMH in order to achieve strategic, mid and long rang research and business goals.

Qualifications:
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical engineering or a life sciences related discipline or additional four years of experience (in addition to the minimum experience requirements listed below) in lieu of a degree
- Masters or Doctoral Degree (PhD) preferred
WORK EXPERIENCE - Six months experience in a technology transfer office working with intellectual property or legal agreements preferred
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
- Knowledge of intellectual property databases
- Ability to understand complex scientific concepts and translate them into business terms
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills
- Competent in Microsoft Office software programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
