Job Description
The Junior/Assistant/Associate/Associate Civil Engineer is responsible to perform professional engineering work in the investigation, planning, design, construction, and maintenance and operations of a variety of public works facilities, systems, and projects as well as residential, commercial, industrial, and multi-family building and development projects.
The City of Modesto has Junior/Assistant/Associate/Associate Civil Engineer positions in our Community and Economic Development, Public Works and Utilities Departments. The eligible list established by this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies in any of the following areas within the City of Modesto: Land Development Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Design, Water Engineering Design, Wastewater Engineering Design, Construction Administration, Water Resources Engineering, and Traffic Engineering.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Junior Engineer - This is the trainee level in the professional engineering series. Positions in this class possess the applicable educational background required of classes in the professional engineering series, but do not possess the practical professional engineering experience. Incumbents learn and perform less complex office and field engineering work in preparation for advancement to the Assistant Engineer level. Assignments are generally limited in scope and are performed within a procedural framework established by higher level staff. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.
Assistant Engineer - This is the entry level in the professional engineering series. This class is distinguished from the Junior Engineer by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same level of independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the Associate Engineer. Incumbents have limited directly related professional engineering work experience. Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks.
Associate Engineer - This is the journey level in the professional engineering series. This class is distinguished from the Assistant Engineer by the assignment of the full range of professional engineering duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Incumbents may exercise direct supervision of technical engineering staff.
Associate Civil/Traffic Engineer - This the journey registered level in the professional engineering series. This class is distinguished from Associate Engineer by the requirement for possession of registration as a professional engineer within the State of California and the ability to independently review, approve and stamp plans.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Junior Engineer
Experience:
None required.
Education:
Equivalent to a Bachelor"s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering. Candidates in their final semester or quarter of college may qualify but must meet the degree requirement prior to appointment.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver"s license.
Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the State of California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, may be substituted for the required education.
Assistant Engineer
Experience:
One year of directly related professional engineering experience.
Education:
A Bachelor"s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver"s license.
Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the State of California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Associate Engineer and Associate Civil/Traffic Engineer
Experience:
Four years of increasingly responsible experience equivalent to Assistant Engineer with the City of Modesto.
Training:
A Bachelor"s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver"s license.
Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by the State of California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Associate Civil/Traffic Engineer
In addition to the experience and training guidelines for Associate Engineer, possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil or traffic engineer in the State of California.
