Assistant Director of Academic Affairs, Center for Security Studies - Walsh School of Foreign Service

Requirements

The Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) , founded in 1919, is a premier school of international affairs. SFS provides a rigorous education grounded in both theory and practice while instilling the Jesuit value of service. Father Edmund A. Walsh, S.J.'s vision was a school that would prepare students for all major forms of foreign representation - official and unofficial, governmental and private sector, whether commercial, financial, consular or diplomatic.

The Assistant Director of Academic Affairs works with the Director of Academic Affairs in the Center for Security Studies (CSS)/Security Studies Program (SSP) to provide student advising, registration, and related academic support to approximately 150-200 of the 550+ SSP graduate students. This position is also responsible for academic record management and is one of the primary points of contact for GU Experience at SSP. By fostering a supportive and structured environment, the Assistant Director plays an important role in ensuring student success and a smooth path toward graduation. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

Academic Advising and Administration

  • Provide virtual and in-person academic advising for new and continuing students throughout the academic year, conducting individual degree audits using GU Experience during the fall, spring, and summer semesters to ensure students are meeting program requirements.
  • Review student degree progress and clear students for graduation in the fall, spring, and summer semesters, processing add/drop for students.
  • Provide support to students experiencing academic or other personal issues and assist in referring students to appropriate resources.
  • Assist the Director of Academic Affairs in planning and executing new student orientation prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters, working with the Director, Associate Director, and Director of Academic Affairs to review course plans before Assistant Director of Faculty Affairs finalizes and submits to the Registrar's Office.
  • Communicate course offerings, program requirements, and related deadlines to students.
  • Assist the Admissions team in reading admission applications during the fall and spring cycles using Slate and make admission decisions.
  • Assist with administering comprehensive exams during the fall and spring semesters while enforcing exam policies, maintaining student records and abiding by FERPA regulations.
  • Assist students with long term goals and career plans, advising special populations of students including accelerated military students, dual-joint degree students, accelerated undergraduate and graduate students, and Foreign Area Officers.




Academic Record Management

  • Manage SSP academic records and serve as SSP's primary point of contact for GU Experience (the degree audit program).
  • Coordinate with GSAS to update student records to accurately reflect academic requirement and curriculum updates.
  • Maintain and ensure the accuracy of student records.




Work Interactions


The Assistant Director of Academic Affairs reports to the Director of Academic Affairs.



Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2-3 years of professional experience in academic advising or closely related field
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • A commitment to outstanding customer service
  • Intercultural communication skills and experience working with diverse student populations highly desirable

Pay Range:


The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$44,022.00 - $73,406.80


Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
